What Is the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace? A South Carolina Guide

Published: October 22, 2026 | Last updated: October 23, 2026

In short: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a federal law that makes health insurance more affordable and accessible. Through the Health Insurance Marketplace, South Carolinians can compare and buy individual and family health plans, and many qualify for subsidies that lower their monthly premium. Plans can't turn you down for pre-existing conditions. For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1.

Health insurance can be confusing, but it doesn't have to be. At Lourie Life & Health, our mission is simple: to educate and empower you with all the options available, so you can feel confident in your insurance decisions.

What Is the Affordable Care Act?

The Affordable Care Act is a federal law designed to make health coverage more affordable and easier to get. Key protections include:

  • No denials for pre-existing conditions: Insurers can't refuse coverage or charge you more because of your health history.
  • Essential health benefits: Every Marketplace plan covers core services like doctor visits, hospital care, prescriptions, maternity care, mental health care, and preventive services.
  • Free preventive care: Many screenings and vaccines are covered at no cost to you.

What Is the Health Insurance Marketplace?

The Marketplace is where you can shop for and compare individual and family health plans. South Carolina uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Plans are grouped into metal levels:

  • Bronze: lowest monthly premium, highest costs when you get care
  • Silver: moderate premium and costs; some people qualify for extra savings on copays and deductibles
  • Gold: higher premium, lower costs when you get care
  • Platinum: highest premium, lowest costs when you get care

How Do ACA Subsidies Work?

Subsidies, also called premium tax credits, lower your monthly premium based on your household income and size. Some people with lower incomes qualify for a plan with a $0 monthly premium. The extra "enhanced" subsidies from past years ended after 2025, so it's important to check what you qualify for in 2027.

When Can I Enroll in an ACA Plan?

  • Open Enrollment: November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027
  • For coverage starting January 1: enroll by December 15, 2026
  • For coverage starting February 1: enroll December 16 – January 15
  • Special Enrollment Periods: you may be able to enroll at other times after a life event, like losing job-based coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby

Do I qualify for a subsidy?

It depends on your household income, household size, and the cost of plans in your area. An agent can check your estimate in a few minutes.

What if I miss Open Enrollment?

You'll need a qualifying life event, like losing other coverage, moving, or having a baby, to enroll outside Open Enrollment.
