Medicare Advantage in South Carolina for 2027: Do You Need to Change Plans?

Published: November 2, 2026 | Last updated: November 2, 2026

In short: For most South Carolinians, the answer is no. If you're happy with your Medicare Advantage plan and your doctors are still in-network for 2027, your plan will renew automatically on January 1. But if your plan is ending in your county, or your doctors are leaving your plan's network, you'll want to act before Medicare Annual Enrollment ends on December 7.

Medicare Advantage is still a popular choice for people with Medicare. More than half of all beneficiaries choose it for its all-in-one coverage, predictable costs, and extra benefits. Each year, plans make some adjustments, and 2027 is no different. A quick review now can give you peace of mind for the year ahead. As your local agency specializing in Medicare, with offices in Columbia, Greenville, and Myrtle Beach, we're here to help you figure out whether your plan still fits your needs and budget, and to make any changes easy if it doesn't.

When Does Medicare Annual Enrollment End?

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs October 15 through December 7. If you need to make a change, this is the time to do it. During AEP, you can:

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
  • Move between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare
  • Join, switch, or drop a Part D prescription drug plan

Changes take effect January 1, 2027. If you're happy with your current plan, you don't need to do anything. It will renew automatically. For a full breakdown of when you can make changes, read Understanding Medicare Enrollment Periods.

Is Your Plan Still a Good Fit?

Take a few minutes with your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC), the letter your plan mailed in September. If you can answer "yes" to these questions, you're likely all set for 2027:

  • ✅ My plan is still available in my county next year
  • ✅ My primary care doctor, specialists, and preferred hospital are still in-network
  • ✅ My prescriptions are still covered at a cost that works for me
  • ✅ I'm comfortable with my 2027 copays and out-of-pocket maximum

If all of these check out, you can relax. You can stay where you are.

When Should You Consider a New Plan?

There are two situations where we especially recommend calling us before December 7.

1. Your Plan Is No Longer Available in Your Area

Sometimes insurance companies decide to stop offering a plan in certain counties. If that happens, your plan must send you a notice in advance. If you received a letter saying your plan is ending, don't worry. You have options, and we'll help you find a new plan that fits.

2. Your Doctors Are No Longer In-Network

Provider networks can change from year to year. Some plans are also moving from PPO designs, which offer more provider flexibility, to HMO designs with more focused networks. If a doctor, specialist, or hospital you count on won't be in your plan's network for 2027, now is the time to compare options. Many South Carolinians have another plan available that includes their doctors.

Also worth a call to Lourie Life & Health: if your prescription costs are going up noticeably, or a benefit you rely on, like dental, vision, or hearing, has changed.

Why Do Medicare Advantage Plans Change Each Year?

Plans update their benefits, networks, and service areas every year based on costs and how many people use their services. In recent years, some insurers have adjusted their extra benefits or narrowed where they offer plans, especially in rural areas.

The good news is that South Carolinians still have a range of Medicare Advantage options, many with $0 or low premiums, prescription coverage, and extra benefits. Even if your plan changes, there's usually a good fit out there for you. Thinking about changing to a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) instead? Read Medicare Supplement vs. Medicare Advantage.
