ACA Marketplace Renewal Notice: What SC Residents Should Know

Your ACA Health Insurance Marketplace Renewal Notice: What It Means for Your 2027 Health Insurance

If you have health insurance through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace, an important piece of mail is on its way this fall: your Marketplace Renewal Notice.

It's easy to set aside, but this notice can affect your coverage, your monthly costs and even your tax refund next year. At Lourie Life & Health, our job is to help you understand it, so you can keep the right health coverage at a price you can afford.

What Is an ACA Health Insurance Marketplace Renewal Notice?

Your renewal notice previews your health insurance for the coming plan year. It shows:

• Changes to your monthly premium

• Updates to your deductible, copays and out-of-pocket costs

• Whether you'll be automatically re-enrolled in your current plan

• Your estimated premium tax credit (subsidy) based on the income you last reported

You get it before Open Enrollment starts (which is November 1), so you have time to review your options and avoid surprises in January.

When Will I Get My Renewal Notice?

Most insurance companies mail renewal notices in October or early November.

South Carolina uses the federal Marketplace, and its key dates for 2027 Health Insurance Open Enrollment are:

• November 1, 2026: Open Enrollment begins for Health Insurance (ACA) plans

• December 15, 2026: Enroll or change plans by this date for coverage starting January 1, 2027

• January 15, 2027: Open Enrollment ends (coverage starts February 1 for anyone who enrolls from December 16th to January 15th)

If you live in a state that runs its own exchange, your dates may be different.

How to Read Your Renewal Notice

Your notice will tell you:

• Whether your current plan is still available in 2027

• Your new premium and expected out-of-pocket costs

• Whether your subsidy is changing based on your income

• Whether you'll be re-enrolled automatically, or whether you need to act to keep your coverage

What to Look For Before You Renew

Before you let your plan renew, check:

• Is your monthly premium going up a lot? A small change can add up over 12 months.

• Are your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions still covered? Networks and drug lists can change every year.

• Are your income and household details current? A new job, a raise, a marriage or a new baby can all change your subsidy.

• Are you in the right metal tier? Bronze, Silver and Gold plans balance monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs differently. The best fit last year may not be the best fit now.

Don't skip the income update. Even if your plan renews automatically, outdated income can give you the wrong subsidy amount. That can mean paying back money at tax time, or missing savings you qualify for. With the right subsidy, some people even qualify for $0 premium health plans.

Auto-Renewal Is Convenient, but It May Not Be Your Best Option

If you do nothing, you may be re-enrolled in the same plan or a similar one. That doesn't mean it's still the best choice for your health, your doctors or your budget. Plans, prices and subsidies change every year, and a few minutes of comparison can save you hundreds of dollars.
